National Museum of Natural History/ European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology
The scientific research center of the NMNH was created by grand-ducal regulation in 1982. Its aim is to carry out research in every domain of the natural patrimony and to contribute to its conservation. The museum staff conducts the research activities in co-operation with research associates and external scientists. The NMNH Dept. of Geophysics/Astrophysics closely collaborates with the European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology (ECGS) through various scientific projects and activities. The Dept. of Geophysics/Astrophysics and ECGS share a building in Walferdange (named the ‘Center for Earth Sciences’) offering all the required facilities: offices for permanent and visiting scientists, laboratory, library, strong computer infrastructure, diverse geodetic instruments as well as an apartment for visiting scientists. The institute host every year PhDs, Post Docs and students for short to medium duration.
NMNH/ECGS developed a recognized expertise in seismology as well as spaceborne geodesy and radar interferometry (InSAR) for crustal deformation studies. NMNH/ECGS installed and operates together with the Goma Volcano Observatory the GPS geodetic network in the Virunga Volcnaic Province.
